SOAI Advocates Stronger Partnership with NCCE on Gender-Based Violence Prevention

The Speak Out Africa Initiative (SOAI), under the GET-SAFE GBV Project, paid an advocacy visit to the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) in Abuja to strengthen collaboration towards combating gender-based violence (GBV) in tertiary institutions and local communities across Nigeria.

Led by SOAIโ€™s project team, the visit aimed to engage the Commissionโ€™s leadership on developing institutional policies, training programs, and digital awareness tools that promote safer learning environments for students and staff. The GET-SAFE GBV Project focuses on building the capacity of tertiary institutions to prevent and respond to sexual harassment, online abuse, and other gender-related violations, using technology and community-driven advocacy.

During the meeting, the NCCE expressed its willingness to partner with SOAI in mainstreaming gender policies within the teacher education curriculum and strengthening institutional accountability systems. The discussion also emphasized the need for sustained student engagement through sensitization campaigns and the establishment of GBV response desks.

This advocacy visit marks another milestone in SOAIโ€™s ongoing partnership with key national stakeholders โ€” including the Nigeria Police Force Gender Unit and the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) โ€” to ensure that the fight against GBV in campuses and communities remains coordinated and effective.

SOAI continues to lead this campaign with support from Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Open Society Foundation, Co-Impact Collaborative, UNICEF, and UNFPA, reaffirming its commitment to creating a Campus and Community Free of GBV.
